As we know, Preview is not just an image and PDF reader, but also an amazing PDF annotator that defaultly built in all Macintosh computers. It allows users to annotate PDF on Mac OS X easily. However, it has some other interesting features. Preview's annotation tools also give you the ability to add text to PDF on Mac OS X. The "Text" annotation tool can add PDF text at any point on a PDF document in the full range of fonts installed on your system. While you can add text to PDF with Preview, you cannot make edits to the existing text in a PDF document.
Below are a simple tutorial to add text to PDF on Mac OS X with Preview, and you can follow these steps to add PDF text on your Mac if need.
Step1, go to the location of the PDF file in the Finder. Control-click on the file and highlight "Open With." Select "Preview" from the list of options.
Step2, click the "Annotate" icon from the toolbar at the top of the Preview window. The annotation toolbar that supports to add PDF text will appear at the bottom of the window.

Step3, click on the "Text" tool. It is on the fourth from the left as above indicated.
Step4, use the cursor to draw a text box. Type in the text box to add text to PDF and you can change the dimensions later if needed.
Step5, select the text to change its appearance. Once you change the appearance of the text in one text box, Preview will make the settings as default in subsequent text boxes until you make more changes.
Tips: if you want to set the typeface before using the text tool to add text to PDF, just click the "Aa" icon at the right end of the toolbar > select a font, style and size in the window > click on the "Text Color" icon at the top of the window to choose a color for the text > click the red circle in the left corner of the "Colors" window and the "Fonts" window to exit the windows, then the selected font will change to the new settings next time you add PDF text.
Generally speaking, the Preview function doesn't suppot to edit PDF text on Mac OS X, and if you want to edit the exiting PDF text, it's better to find a PDF editor like Adobe Acrobat or use another way - convert the PDF to editable Word dcoument and edit PDF in Word, then convert Word back to PDF. This is an efficient way as most people who have used the professional Adobe Acrobat say, it doesn't allow you to edit PDF text in fact, it just does as the Preview does.
